what are those things sticking out of the ground in the forest?

those things sticking up are cyprus knees. the roots of the cyprus trees kind of buckle and grow out of the ground, and back down into the ground. the park employee said that it is not fully understood why. she said there's some in the swamp over 6 feet tall. crazy, huh?
